The Pushkar Camel Fair —
Three Days at the Centre of It
The Pushkar Camel Fair is the photographic centrepiece of this expedition — and one of the most significant documentary photography events in Asia. The livestock fair combines camel and horse trading with the Kartik Purnima pilgrimage, drawing traders from across Rajasthan and hundreds of thousands of Hindu devotees to the sacred lake. Three full days allow proper access to both the livestock grounds — where camel traders camp with their animals in conditions unchanged for centuries — and the ghats, where pilgrims perform ritual bathing at dawn.
Portrait opportunities here are among the finest on any India photography expedition.

Jodhpur — Indigo Geometry
& Pre-Dawn Lanes
The Blue City is one of the most immediately distinctive visual environments in India — the Brahmin quarter’s indigo-painted houses, the monumental Mehrangarh Fort rising above the old city, the Sardar Market at dusk. We arrive in the afternoon and spend the first evening in the market lanes, learning the geography of the city before the cameras come out in earnest. Day two begins before sunrise: the pre-dawn hours in the Navchokiya quarter — the blue lanes behind the fort — are the most photographically productive hours in Jodhpur.

Jaipur — Architectural Geometry
& Chromatic Colour
The Pink City demands compositional thinking over quick capture. The Hawa Mahal’s 953 sandstone windows, the Jantar Mantar observatory’s abstract masonry instruments, the pre-dawn flower market and the Amber Fort at first light — two days to work the architecture, the colour and the street. Jaipur is where the expedition’s visual register shifts from the desert intensity of Jodhpur and Pushkar to something more architectural, more geometric, more demanding of compositional discipline.

Agra — The Taj
Beyond the Postcard
The Taj Mahal is one of the most photographed buildings on earth and the least photographed well. This expedition approaches Agra through three perspectives: the pre-dawn session from Mehtab Bagh on the opposite bank, the Agra Fort in morning light, and the working city — marble workshops, the Yamuna riverside, the street life that communicates Agra as a living place rather than a heritage site.
The photographer who arrives at Mehtab Bagh before sunrise, in the mist of a November morning, makes an image of the Taj Mahal that is genuinely different from every other.

I first came to Rajasthan in 2008 and have returned every year since — by bus, by train, on a Royal Enfield, and more recently by private car with a driver who has become a friend and a guide in the deepest sense. In recent years, with small workshop groups, I have understood Rajasthan differently: not as a set of spectacular destinations but as a living visual culture whose daily life — in the market lanes of Jodhpur, at the ghats of Pushkar at dawn — is the actual subject of the work.
