Photography Workshop Algarve & Lisbon

Not just a landscape.
A visual edge.

The Algarve is one of the most photogenic coastlines in Europe — but also one of the most photographed. The challenge is to see beyond the postcard. From the black rocks of Castelejo to the golden arches of Lagos, from the raw cliff of Cabo San Vicente to the melancholy of Lisbon at dawn — this is about developing your own visual language in a place where the easy image has already been made a million times. The question is how to make the necessary one.

Coastal Light

Golden hour, blue hour, long exposure on the Atlantic seascape at its most dramatic.

Rock Formations

Sea arches, cliffs and the geological drama of Ponta da Piedade at low tide.

Night & Milky Way

Praia do Castelejo — black rocks and one of the darkest skies on the European Atlantic coast.

Lisbon & Street

Alfama at dawn, local fishermen, the melancholy light of the city that faces the Atlantic.

Ponta da Piedade Lagos Algarve photography — golden cliffs sea arches golden hour Atlantic Portugal
Day 4 · Lagos Ponta da Piedade —
Golden Cliffs at the Atlantic Edge
The rock formations of Ponta da Piedade are the Algarve at its most visually extreme — golden limestone arches, sea caves and pillars rising from the turquoise Atlantic water. We approach by kayak at low tide for compositions that no cliff-top viewpoint can produce, and return at golden hour when the rock turns amber and the sea goes dark below. Two sessions, two completely different images of the same place. Best light: Low tide morning by kayak · Golden hour from cliff top · Sunset reflections in tide pools Reserve Your Spot

Cabo San Vicente Algarve photography — end of Europe lighthouse sunset Atlantic Portugal
Day 3 · Cabo San Vicente The End of Europe —
Where the Light Runs Out
The southwestern-most point of continental Europe — a cliff that drops vertically into the Atlantic, with a lighthouse that has guided ships around the corner since 1846. We arrive in the afternoon and stay through sunset, when the last light of Europe sits on the horizon and the cliff face turns gold. The most emotionally powerful landscape on the entire expedition — and the most difficult to photograph well without falling back on the obvious composition. Best light: 40 minutes before sunset · Post-sunset blue hour on the lighthouse tower Reserve Your Spot

Praia do Castelejo Algarve night photography — Milky Way black rocks Atlantic coast Portugal
Day 2 · West Coast & Night Photography Castelejo & the Milky Way —
Night Photography on the Atlantic
The west coast of the Algarve is one of the darkest skies on the European Atlantic seaboard. Praia do Castelejo — black volcanic rocks scattered across a wide beach facing the open ocean — is the location for the workshop’s night photography session. We photograph the Milky Way rising from the sea, with the rock formations as foreground elements. A technique session covers long exposure night photography before we go out in the dark. Equipment: tripod essential · Wide-angle lens · High ISO performance · No moon ideally Reserve Your Spot

Lisbon Alfama photography workshop Algarve — street life dawn Fado melancholy light Portugal
Days 6–7 · Lisbon Lisbon — The City That Faces
the Atlantic and Remembers
The Alfama at dawn, before the trams begin running — narrow streets still damp, the blue light of early morning on the tiled facades, an occasional figure moving through a scene that looks completely unchanged from fifty years ago. Lisbon closes the expedition with a documentary register entirely different from the coastal landscape work. Here the photography is about human presence, about the particular quality of light in a city built for the sea but turned away from it. Best light: Dawn in the Alfama · Miradouros at dusk · Fado neighbourhood at night Reserve Your Spot

Reading a Place Before
Photographing It

Trained in psychology before picking up a camera. Fifteen years of expeditions across Italy, Europe and Asia. Fine art work exhibited in three US galleries. What distinguishes the approach is not technique alone — it is the capacity to read a place before photographing it. Psychology, cultural observation and visual instinct working together.

What They Experienced

I have done workshops with Raffaele in India, Vietnam, Cambodia and Brittany. What sets him apart is that he does not focus on technique alone. His ability to connect with the environment and with people is remarkable.

The Milky Way session at Castelejo was unlike anything I had done before. Raffaele prepared us with a technique session first and then we went out in the dark. I came back with my best night photograph ever made.

Thomas B.Germany · Algarve Workshop 2024

The kayak at Ponta da Piedade — at low tide, inside the arches — an image I could not have made any other way. This is what Raffaele offers: access, timing and visual intelligence.
