A Private Photography Expedition into Cambodia

From the stone faces of Bayon at golden hour to the silk-cotton trees of Ta Prohm, from the floating villages of Tonle Sap to the colonial boulevards of Phnom Penh at dawn — this expedition is built around one purpose: helping you create images that go beyond the postcard. Three intensive days inside the Angkor complex. A morning on the lake. A city that photographs with a weight and texture unlike anywhere else in Southeast Asia.

Maximum 4 participants. This is the only group size at which genuine individual mentoring is possible in the field. Every day, every location, every image review is conducted as if the expedition exists for you alone.

Angkor Wat sunrise photography Cambodia — mastering golden hour light reflecting pool dawn session

Angkor Wat & Angkor Thom —
Mastering Light in the Temple Complex

Three full days structured around light. Dawn at the reflecting pool, early morning in the inner galleries of Angkor Wat, late afternoon at Bayon when the stone faces catch the last western light and the coach tours have gone. Hidden corridors, bas-relief detail work, the quiet sections of the complex that private photo tours reach and group tours never do.

Best light: 45 minutes before sunrise at the reflecting pool · Bayon at golden hour

Ta Prohm jungle temple photography Cambodia — silk-cotton trees stone ruins natural light Angkor

Ta Prohm —
Jungle, Stone and Natural Light

The temple the jungle refused to release. Silk-cotton trees have grown through the walls for centuries, their roots descending over stone doorways in thick curtains. We arrive at opening — before the crowds — and move past the famous viewpoints into the overgrown inner courtyards where the atmosphere of a place slowly returning to forest is still intact.

Camera techniques for working in filtered canopy light, photographing texture and root systems, and avoiding the crowds through timing and positioning.

Best light: Opening hour (5:30am) · Last 40 minutes before closing

Tonle Sap floating village documentary photography Cambodia — fishermen lake dawn private photo tour Siem Reap

Tonle Sap —
Floating Villages and Fishermen

Southeast Asia’s largest freshwater lake. We leave before dawn by private boat for the floating village communities near Siem Reap — where entire lives are organised around the seasonal rise and fall of the water. Lake life, fishermen returning from overnight trips, children in wooden boats. One of the most distinctive documentary photography subjects in the region.

Private boat excursion included · Best light: first 90 minutes after sunrise

Transfer Siem Reap to Phnom Penh Cambodia photography workshop — street photography sunset riverside

Siem Reap to Phnom Penh —
Arrival and City at Sunset

Morning transfer to Phnom Penh. The capital carries the weight of Cambodian history in its bones — colonial boulevards, river markets, the Royal Palace behind its walls. We arrive in the early afternoon and go straight to work: the Riverside promenade, the Central Market, the streets around Wat Phnom. The day closes at sunset on the banks of the Tonle Sap River, where the city turns gold and the light on the water is extraordinary.

Best light: Riverside at sunset · Central Market early afternoon

Phnom Penh dawn waterfront photography Cambodia — portfolio review final session workshop departures

Phnom Penh —
Dawn on the Waterfront and Departures

A final dawn session on the Tonle Sap waterfront — the light at 6am on the river is worth the early start. Monks leaving the temples, market vendors arriving, the city finding its rhythm before the heat of the day. Final image review and portfolio selection before departures. You leave Cambodia with a body of work, not just a collection of photographs.

What They Experienced

Raffaele’s knowledge of the temples is extraordinary. We were at Angkor Wat while the mist was still on the water — completely alone, with the most extraordinary light I have ever photographed. Thomas R. Germany · Asia Expedition 2024
The combination of temples, lake and city gave us an incredibly varied body of work. Not just Angkor — the whole journey through Cambodia was designed with real photographic intelligence. Sarah M. United Kingdom · Asia Expedition 2023
Small group, extraordinary access, real personal attention. Raffaele knows when to be where. I came back with images I am genuinely proud of — and a new way of seeing ancient places. Marie L. France · Asia Expedition 2024

Cambodia Photography Workshop —
Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need photography experience to join this Cambodia workshop?+No. The expedition is open to all levels — from photographers making their first serious international trip to experienced practitioners looking for an expert photography mentor in the field. Any camera is welcome, including film and mirrorless cameras.
Why February for a Siem Reap photography expedition?+February sits in the heart of Cambodia’s dry season. Temperatures are comfortable, morning mist settles over the Angkor moats creating extraordinary atmospheric conditions, and the tourist numbers are lower than the December–January peak. Light quality in February is among the best of the year for temple photography.
What camera equipment do I need — mirrorless, DSLR or film?+Any camera with manual control. A wide-angle lens (24mm or wider) is strongly recommended for temple interiors and the corridors of Angkor. A monopod is more practical than a tripod when moving between locations. An off-camera flash is useful for dimly lit inner sanctuaries. The expedition adapts to mirrorless, DSLR and film cameras equally.
Is the Tonle Sap lake excursion included?+Yes. Day 5 is dedicated entirely to Tonle Sap — a private boat excursion to the floating villages near Siem Reap. Lake life, fishermen, communities built on water. One of the most distinctive documentary photography subjects in Southeast Asia and consistently one of the expedition highlights.
Is this a private photo tour or a small-group workshop?+Both, in practice. The strict maximum of 4 participants means the expedition functions as a private photo tour with the structure and depth of a week-long workshop. Every image review, every location decision, every piece of advice is given with your work specifically in mind.
Can I join this Cambodia photography workshop alone?+Yes. Solo participants are welcome and common. The maximum group of 4 means solo participants receive the same individual attention as private bookings. The expedition is guaranteed to run even with a single participant — no last-minute cancellations.
What is included in the €2,800 fee?+Full-time photography guidance and expert mentorship across 7 days, private tuk-tuk transport throughout the Angkor complex, private boat excursion on Tonle Sap, daily image review and editing sessions, and post-expedition portfolio support. International flights, accommodation, meals, Angkor pass, travel insurance and Cambodian visa are not included.
Why only 4 participants on this Cambodia photography workshop?+Four is the maximum at which genuine individual mentoring is possible in the field. In a larger group, the guide relationship becomes logistical rather than educational. At 4, I can observe each photographer’s approach in real time and give personal attention that makes this an expedition rather than a tour.
What is the cancellation and refund policy?+The tuition fee is fully refundable if you cancel at least 30 days before departure. No deposit is required to hold your place. We recommend purchasing comprehensive travel insurance for all international expeditions.
